A towering piece of 20th century classical music, the War Requiem was Britten’s way of respecting the memories of all of those who had died in the two world wars that ravaged Europe and the rest of the world, to a lesser extent, in the early 20th century. Although secular, it combines some pieces of the traditional Latin mass with the poetry of Wilfred Owen, a British soldier from the First World War who is often regarded as one of the best soldier-poets of the time period. A beautiful work, made even better by the fact that the composer is conducting it, thus rendering it the definitive version by definition.
